Polypropylene pole-top boxes support smarter, more secure electricity networks

Jul 14, 2026 | Power Process Systems

As South Africa accelerates the rollout of smart prepaid electricity metering, innovative enclosure technology from Power Process Systems (PPS) is helping utilities improve network security, reduce electricity theft and protect critical electrical infrastructure.

Every electricity connection relies on equipment that must be safely housed and protected from harsh weather elements, tampering and unauthorised access. Protective pole-top enclosures protect various electrical components.

These include prepaid electricity meters, circuit breakers and surge arresters amongst others, which safeguard both the network and the public while ensuring reliable electricity distribution. As utilities modernise their networks through smart prepaid metering programmes, these enclosures have become an increasingly important component of electricity infrastructure.

Supporting the smart meter rollout

Utilities across South Africa, including Eskom and municipalities, continue replacing conventional prepaid meters with smart metering technology that provides improved operational visibility and greater control over electricity consumption.

Smart meters enable utilities to monitor usage in real time, improve revenue collection and better manage increasingly complex distribution networks. “At the same time, utilities continue facing persistent challenges associated with electricity theft, meter tampering and network overloading, making secure protective enclosures more important than ever,” comments Power Process Systems (PPS) Sales Director Nhlanhla Zondo.

Designed for demanding environments

To support these projects, PPS has designed and manufactures a new range of polypropylene pole-top boxes specifically developed for smart prepaid metering applications. Manufactured from polypropylene polymer, the enclosures have been designed to deliver a combination of durability, performance and manufacturing efficiency. The boxes are engineered to protect smart meters and associated electrical equipment; withstand harsh environmental conditions.

These include prolonged exposure to sun and rain; provide a robust barrier against tampering and unauthorised access; and enable efficient, cost-effective mass production to support large utility deployment programmes. Such design considerations help utilities deploy infrastructure capable of delivering long service life while reducing maintenance requirements.

Local manufacturing delivering local value

Beyond the technical performance of the product itself, the project demonstrates the value of local manufacturing in supporting South Africa’s infrastructure development. Manufacturing the polypropylene pole-top boxes locally allows PPS to respond efficiently to customer requirements while contributing to domestic industrial capability.

The project has also created employment opportunities for young artisans and manufacturing personnel, providing valuable workplace experience while supporting skills development within the country’s engineering sector. By combining product innovation with workforce development, the project contributes to both infrastructure modernisation and broader socio-economic development.

Building resilient electricity networks

As utilities continue investing in smarter electricity distribution systems, every component within the network plays an important role in ensuring long-term reliability. “Protective enclosures may not always receive the same attention as meters or network hardware, but they remain essential in safeguarding critical electrical equipment throughout its operational life,” highlights Zondo.

Through the development of its polypropylene pole-top boxes, PPS is supporting utilities with locally manufactured solutions designed to improve infrastructure protection, enhance operational efficiency and contribute to the continued modernisation of South Africa’s electricity distribution network.

About Power Process Systems

Power Process Systems (PPS) is an electrical enclosure and distribution equipment manufacturer. At our fully equipped manufacturing, assembly and wiring facilities in Gauteng and the Western Cape, we produce all components of our products in-house.

In our CNC plants we cut, bend, and nest various enclosures, racking assemblies and mounting frames. We also laminate fibreglass boxes and have a complete range of polyethylene enclosures. We fit and wire these enclosures according to required specifications in our various assembly lines. They are then FAT tested prior to delivery.

We predominantly supply to the electrical infrastructure market. Our focus is on electrical reticulation (underground and overhead) and commercial distribution (office complexes, shopping malls, hospitals, etc.).

We are an OEM and product partner to CBI, ABB, Schneider Electric, Hager, Legrand, Chint, and many other common switchgear brands.

We have an ISO 9001/2008/ SABS quality accreditation and are a SABS accredited production facility for electrical assemblies up to 10 kA.
