From distribution boards and industrial enclosures to control systems, Power Process Systems offers locally manufactured electrical infrastructure designed around the demands of modern mining operations
As South Africa’s mining industry continues to invest in productivity, automation and operational efficiency, the electrical infrastructure supporting these systems has become increasingly important.
Electra Mining Africa 2026 will once again bring together the technologies and companies supporting the mining, industrial, electrical and power sectors. For Power Process Systems (PPS), the event provides an opportunity to highlight a less visible but essential part of this ecosystem in terms of the electrical enclosures, distribution equipment and control infrastructure that enable power and automation systems to operate safely and reliably.
“Mining environments place very specific demands on electrical infrastructure. Equipment needs to be robust, fit for purpose and configured around the realities of the installation rather than simply selected from a standard catalogue,” comments Nhlanhla Zondo, Sales Director at PPS. “This is where local engineering and manufacturing capability can make a significant difference.”
A broad industrial product range
PPS manufactures a range of electrical enclosure and distribution equipment, with solutions that can be configured to meet different installation requirements. Its NEMA range, for example, comprises rugged industrial enclosures manufactured from 304 stainless steel or 3CR12 and rated up to IP65. Flat or grid-type chassis configurations are available, providing flexibility for different equipment and installation requirements.
For larger power distribution applications, PPS manufactures free-standing distribution boards in standard sizes, while also offering non-standard or size-specific panels. Their modular design allows configurations to be assembled according to individual requirements, with options for units to be supplied as complete panels or assembled on site.
This ability to adapt equipment is particularly relevant to industrial environments where electrical infrastructure must accommodate existing plant layouts, equipment specifications and operational requirements.
“Every installation has its own set of constraints, whether that relates to available space, equipment configuration, accessibility or the way the system needs to be maintained,” explains Zondo. “A modular approach allows us to respond to those requirements while still providing a robust and professionally manufactured solution.”
Control infrastructure for increasingly automated operations
As mining operations become more automated and connected, the physical infrastructure housing and supporting control equipment is also evolving. PPS manufactures control consoles to client specifications, with desk-mount, top-section and stand-alone configurations available. Consoles can be manufactured in mild steel, stainless steel or 3CR12, depending on the application.
The company’s Series 19-inch rack panels extend this flexibility into control, data and IT applications. Their modular design allows multiple panels to be bolted together to form larger segmented enclosures, while adjustable rails and removable components provide improved accessibility and versatility. For mining operations increasingly reliant on automation, monitoring and data, the relationship between physical infrastructure and digital systems is becoming more important.
“Digitalisation is only as effective as the infrastructure supporting it,” says Zondo. “Control, communication and monitoring equipment still needs a physical environment that protects it, provides accessibility for maintenance and can be adapted as requirements change.”
Solutions designed around operating conditions
PPS’s product range also includes DMC utility enclosures, which provide a cost-effective option for smaller installations. Manufactured from Dough Moulded Compound, these enclosures offer structural strength and all-weather properties suited to a range of electrical applications.
The company’s broader manufacturing capability supports its ability to produce and configure equipment according to specific client requirements. PPS operates manufacturing, assembly and wiring facilities in Gauteng and the Western Cape, with CNC production capabilities used to cut, bend and nest enclosures, racking assemblies and mounting frames.
The company also laminates fibreglass boxes and manufactures polyethylene enclosures, while its assembly lines allow equipment to be fitted and wired according to specification before being factory acceptance tested prior to delivery. For mining and other industrial clients, this local capability offers an important combination of engineering flexibility, manufacturing control and responsiveness.
Local manufacturing supports long-term resilience
The value of local manufacturing extends beyond the initial supply of equipment. In an operating environment where infrastructure needs to be maintained, modified and upgraded over time, having access to local manufacturing and engineering expertise can support the longer-term performance of installed systems.
PPS’s approach reflects a broader shift towards incremental modernisation, where existing infrastructure is upgraded or adapted rather than automatically replaced. This can include component-level upgrades, enclosure modifications and the integration of newer technologies into established systems.
“For us, it is about understanding what the customer is trying to achieve and then engineering the infrastructure around that requirement,” explains Zondo. “The objective is not simply to supply an enclosure or distribution board. It is to provide equipment that makes sense within the wider electrical and operational system.”
As the mining sector continues to modernise, that systems-based approach will become increasingly important. The technologies attracting attention may be automation platforms, digital monitoring systems, advanced drives or energy-management solutions, but all depend on reliable physical infrastructure to turn those technologies into working industrial systems.

Power Process Systems (PPS) is an electrical enclosure and distribution equipment manufacturer. At our fully equipped manufacturing, assembly and wiring facilities in Gauteng and the Western Cape, we produce all components of our products in-house.
In our CNC plants we cut, bend, and nest various enclosures, racking assemblies and mounting frames. We also laminate fibreglass boxes and have a complete range of polyethylene enclosures. We fit and wire these enclosures according to required specifications in our various assembly lines. They are then FAT tested prior to delivery.
