PRESS RELEASE

DPI Plastics - regional winner and national finalist at Productivity Awards

12 November, 2014: A regional gold trophy and national finalist certificate have been awarded to leading water reticulation, drainage pipe and fitting systems manufacturer DPI Plastics, at the Productivity SA Awards hosted on 30 October at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg.

The Productivity SA Awards aim to promote productivity within South African industry, to raise awareness about the role of productivity in growing and developing the country’s economy, and to increase South Africa’s competitiveness on a global scale.

The awards are divided into four categories, namely; Corporate Sector, Public Sector, Emerging Business Sector, and Co-operative Sector. DPI Plastics was a Gauteng regional winner for the best implementation of the ‘Work Place Challenge’ initiative from Productivity SA and national finalist in the Corporate Sector category of the awards.

The Workplace Challenge (WPC) programme is Productivity SA’s best operating practice/world-class manufacturing programme, and is a supply side programme of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), managed by Productivity SA. The WPC consists of the following four modules that are implemented over a two to three year period;

  • Goal Alignment: To make sure that mini business units (MBUs) are formed and that company strategies and goals are filtered down through all levels of the organisation with each MBU understanding what their goals are in order to achieve said goals.
  • Cleaning and organising: This revolves around the 5S system, namely; sort, set in order, shine, standardise and sustain.
  • Teamwork: Continuous improvement with small group activities.
  • Leadership: Coaching, motivating, empowering teams and maintaining positive work relationships.

DPI Plastics in Gauteng has implemented the first three modules, and the fourth module will be done in early 2015. DPI Plastics production manager Napoleon Potlo says that being nominated as a national finalist has shown DPI Plastics that it is moving forward, and has motivated the team to place more emphasis and focus on the Productivity SA programme. “I see a bright future for this programme within DPI Plastics. I believe that it will carry the company to the next level and continue to foster a culture of continuous improvement and employee empowerment,” he explains.

According to Potlo, Productivity SA programmes are an attitude changer for people who want success in their respective work places. “It involves everybody within the workplace and allows them an opportunity to voice their opinions freely. This aids in helping people realise the importance of their work, and allows staff to better understand their contribution to the process of running the company successfully and sustainably,” he concludes.
