Vereeniging-based DCD Heavy Engineering operates a permanent onsite clinic in conjunction with Basadi Occupational Health, which boasts more than 40 years addressing workers' primary and occupational health needs through onsite clinics and mobile units.

DCD Heavy Engineering human resources manager Sue Steyn notes that since the establishment of the onsite clinic, the number of lost time injuries has decreased substantially. "When an injury occurs, the worker is treated immediately. This saves valuable time in high risk situations."

Occupational health nurse practitioner Sister Charlotte Laas is based at the DCD Heavy Engineering south works onsite clinic. She boasts qualifications in general nursing, psychiatric nursing, community health nursing, midwifery, nursing education and management and occupational health. One of her primary duties is to carry out medicals on all new staff members.

“When an employee joins the company, an entry medical is carried out to determine their medical status and to ensure that they are medically fit to carry out the task for which they will be employed. Employees that are exposed to a potentially harmful environment, such as loud noise, are given a full medical annually to ensure that they remain fit for the job. The medical also identifies and addresses any health problems,” she explains.

An exit medical is required for all employees leaving the company. "If a former employee develops a medical ailment after leaving the company, the exit medical is important in determining if the condition is as a result of the work carried out at DCD, or whether it developed elsewhere," adds Laas.

In addition to the onsite clinic, DCD Heavy Engineering also offers First Aid training to its employees. There are bi-monthly contact sessions where participants are provided the opportunity to discuss relevant topics and issues. This serves as ‘refresher training’ on pertinent First Aid matters.

In the event of serious worker injury, DCD Heavy Engineering has a standing contract with emergency medical care and response services provider ER24. "Swift and effective care is required in critical situations, and DCD Heavy Engineering is committed to comprehensive worker healthcare, no matter what the requirement," Steyn concludes.
