At present the largest diversified privately-owned drilling company in South Africa, Rosond has 1 500 employees. It pioneered all-women drill-rig crews at Kumba in the Northern Cape, where 10% of its workforce are women, starting from a zero base This is largely due to its next-generation drill rigs being fully automated, removing the need for strenuous manual labour.

“By automating the loading of drill rods and core barrels, hands-free rod handling has enabled operations to reach a new level of safety. As a result of continuously addressing safety in our daily operations, our safety statistics have improved significantly,” comments Rosond MD Ricardo Ribeiro.

During the year in review, the drilling technology solutions provider consolidated its rapid expansion as part of its strategy for further growth by taking on additional work in Sub-Saharan Africa. In particular, the year was also significant for Rosond due to its announcement end January 2022 that major health and safety milestones had been achieved at the Sishen and Kolomela Mines of Anglo American’s Kumba Iron Ore operation in the Northern Cape.

“Safety is embedded in our culture and will always be our number one priority. It is our anchor value that formed the foundation of our business 67 years ago and continues to support and protect us today. These achievements, and those at other locations, are attributable to the culture of caring and responsibility embedded across all our operational sites. We are very proud of our safety culture and keeping our employees safe,” comments Ribeiro. Rosond has established an excellent Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) record by implementing stringent SHE policies and complying with all legislation in pursuit of Zero Harm.

In February 2022, Rosond entered into a partnership to develop local businesses in the Northern Cape as part of its Enterprise Supplier Development (ESD) initiatives. “We strive to translate new opportunities for Rosond into opportunities for the communities in which we are active, so that our growth in turn benefits these communities,” comments Ribeiro.

Clement Rikhotso was appointed Operations Director in March 2022, assuming responsibility for all the company’s surface exploration drilling activities, in addition to consolidating its mission as the leading mining and geoscientific solutions provider in Southern Africa.

Rosond’s ongoing championing of women and gender equality in mining saw it partner with WiMBIZ, SA in March 2022 after Ribeiro became an Advisory Board Member. Rosond is also establishing an inaugural women’s forum at one of its drill sites in the Northern Cape to provide a platform to address ancillary issues such as family planning and financial literacy.

“There is a lot of responsibility involved in promoting gender equality in the mining industry, especially as we afford women the opportunity to be financially independent and to have viable careers,” says Ribeiro.

The year was capped off by Rosond winning ‘Large Business of the Year’ at the 2022 South African Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (SAPCC) Absa Business Excellence Awards held in Houghton, Johannesburg on 5 November 2022. “We are extremely proud of this recognition, which reflects the impact Rosond continues to have on the communities in which it operates and on the broader economy,” says Ribeiro.

At the end of last year, Rosond finalised its latest bursary recipient scheme. The Rosond bursary scheme was established in 2020 and assists the dependents of employees, as well as deserving students in host communities who need financial assistance to complete their studies.

Looking to the future, Rosond expects to clinch further work in the Southern African market. “We will continue to digitise our operations. We are in a unique position in that we have 28 drill rigs with telemetry systems in an 80 km2 radius in the Northern Cape, as an example. The data collected from this will be significant going forward in terms of data prediction, software development and drilling efficiencies,” concludes Ribeiro.
