PRESS RELEASE

Monitoring and alarm system features improved functionality

22 February, 2016: MSA Africa aims to make the lives of firefighters safer and their jobs easier by continuously improving its products. In light of this MSA has upgraded the interface of its Alpha Personal Network technology with an improved display.

The Alpha Personal Network from MSA is an electronic personal monitoring and alarm system that can also be enhanced with telemetric capability. A unique feature of the system is its versatility, as it can be used as a standalone system or in conjunction with a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).

“Alpha technology encompasses a network of innovations that improve safety, efficiency and capability beyond classic SCBA systems,” MSA Africa respiratory and fire helmets product manager Suraksha Mohun comments.

The robust and user-friendly Alpha Network System monitors the location and breathable air of rescue personnel, so as to ensure a high level of safety for emergency teams. The system hardware is fireproof and designed to withstand the hostile environment of emergency fire rescue operations.

The system also boasts excellent receiver sensitivity. The highly reliable signal allows for effective communication at a range of up to 4 km. The system is also able to automatically select an available channel, through a licence-free 866 MHz frequency.

The monitoring and telemetry components of the system include the alphaMITTER, alphaHUD, alphaSCOUT and alphaBASE software. AlphaSCOUT is a pressure gauge, mini-computer, motion sensor and alarm that calculates remaining service time, based on the user’s breathing rate.

The alphaMITTER is a short-range transmitter attached to a SCBA. The alphaHUD is able to deliver an evacuation signal when used in conjunction with the alphaSCOUT and alphaBASE command communication option.

The latest upgrade features an improved display, making it even more user-friendly. “It has an automated wireless tally-board system which provides effective information to operational centres on the location and supply of breathable air to individuals,” Mohun explains.

“MSA Africa is the first company to have developed a gas detector to be used in in tandem with the system, which not only displays the actual gas levels, but is also capable of giving a warning when an acceptable safety limit is breached,” she concludes.
