The new Gravity suspension harness was officially launched locally in March 2015 by the African division of MSA – a global leader in the development, manufacture and supply of sophisticated products that protect people's health and safety.

The MSA Gravity suspension harness is available in a ‘Premium’ and a ‘Light’ version, and is suitable for use in a variety of applications that require fall protection, including; rope access, first responder rescue, telecommunications, oil and gas, wind energy and general industry.

MSA Africa fall protection consultant Ashanti Whiteman states that the Gravity harness is suitable for controlled descent, positioning, ladder climbing, rescue, and fall arrest. “The lightweight and comfortable Gravity range provides users with high-strength and superior-quality performance.”

For added safety, the Gravity harness range boasts a unique integral load indicator in the form of a webbing that opens in order to indicate to the user that the harness was previously involved in a fall and should not be reused, but rather discarded.

The Light Gravity suspension harness features steel D-Rings and steel triple locking carabiners, while the Premium Gravity suspension harness makes use of aluminium D-Rings and triple locking carabiners with a 23KNstrength to ensure full peace-of-mind and security for the user.

Both Gravity suspension harnesses feature five anchor points for connection – two on the front of the harness, one near the top and the other near the bottom. The Gravity harnesses also feature a ventral attachment point at the waist, and fall arrest rated back and front D-Rings. Fully padded leg loops with quick release buckles ensure that the user is able to free themselves in an emergency.

“Other design features that set the Gravity range apart from other harnesses available in the local market include; aluminium automatic buckles for closure at the legs, non-removable steel or aluminium triple auto lock connectors, as well as tool holders on the waist and leg straps of the harness,” adds Whiteman.

Comfort is another important aspect to take into account when designing a suspension harness, and Whiteman reveals that both the Premium and Light Gravity suspension harnesses come standard with a waist manufactured from fully breathable material designed with multi-layered padding that dissipates pressure from the webbing to reduce fatigue when working for long periods of time. “The Gravity suspension harnesses also feature additional shoulder padding to protect the user’s neck from unnecessary discomfort caused by neck chafing.”

What’s more, the MSA Gravity suspension harness is RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) enabled, which allows the harness to be traced. “The RFID system allows information regarding the harness to be relayed to an electronic reader for monitoring. This saves valuable time in rescue operations, where mere seconds could mean the difference between life and death,” Whiteman concludes.
