A world first for gas detection technology

19 November 2014
A first-of-its-kind gas detector that eliminates the need for bottled calibration gas and accessories for bump tests, due to its innovative stand-alone bump test feature, has been launched locally by the African division of MSA - a global leader in the development, manufacture and supply of sophisticated products that protect people's health and safety.

MSA Africa portable gas detection product manager Tshepo Lebona highlights that years of scientific research, patented sensor interrogation technology and proprietary sensor response methodologies have delivered the world’s first gas detector with a stand-alone gas free bump test. “Patented XCell Pulse Technology on the Altair 2X ensures a simple, inexpensive and unique approach to bump testing.”

When the device is put on bump, it automatically begins an electronic pulse check. This activates the sensor catalyst and electrolyte interaction, and makes minor corrections against prior calibration values. “To complete the bump test, the user simply has to exhale towards the sensor inlet. The oxygen sensor detects the drop in oxygen content of the exhaled breath, hence verifying an open gas path to sensor,” Lebona continues.

If the gas detector passes both of these tests, it passes the bump test. If the Altair 2X has not been bump tested, there are red LED indicators that warn the user. Lebona reveals that these red LEDs are also activated if the device fails the bump test. A check mark on the display screen and green LEDs indicate that the Altair 2X has passed the bump test and is ready for use.

“MSA recommends that gas calibration is carried out every 60 days on the device to ensure continued accuracy in performance. If the Altair 2X fails the stand-alone bump test, gas calibration should also be conducted to identify and correct any problems,” he adds.

According to Lebona, the Altair 2X boasts additional features which make it stand out from other gas detectors in the market. “The device makes use of unique pulse check technology, which automatically checks sensor response and corrects the sensor integrity.”

The Altair 2X verifies that the flow path to the sensor is clear, ensuring that gas can easily reach the sensor. These features make the Altair 2X suitable for use in various markets, including; drilling, refining, chemical processing, metals processing, general industrial use, and fire service.

The Altair 2X offers easy one-button, gloved-hand operation, ensuring that the user can operate the device at all times. The device is protected by a durable, rubberised housing, which has passed multiple 25 foot drop tests. There is also a large, high contrast display screen which shows results as parts per million (PPM) and the visual sensor status. For increased user safety, the Altair 2X features an end of sensor life indicator with alarm.

Lebona believes that the Altair 2X gas detector offers many benefits to the user. “The Altair 2X provides the fastest sensor response times and the lowest calibration gas flow rate on the market. In addition, the stand-alone bump test reduces maintenance and increases productivity, and the onscreen step-by-step instructions ensure that anyone can conduct the bump test,” he concludes.
