22 September 2020
Engineering consultancy Zutari is one of 53 companies on Fortune magazine’s 2020 ‘Change the World’ list. This is the sixth edition of the list, which highlights that profit can inspire companies to tackle society’s unmet needs, especially against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic. This has resulted in an unprecedented level of collaboration and cooperation between companies on a global basis.

Ranked 30th, Fortune states that Zutari “focuses on sustainable Afrocentric infrastructure innovations.” It “seeks community input to guide its design decisions.” The Fortune ‘Change the World’ list recognises companies that have had a positive social impact through activities that are part of their core business strategy. Nominees are assessed on measurable social impact, business results, degree of innovation and corporate integration. “At Zutari, we co-create an engineered impact in the communities, economies and environments we operate in,” comments Zutari CEO Dr. Gustav Rohde.

The latest accolade follows Zutari topping the Top 225 International Design Firm Rankings for Africa, published by US magazine Engineering News-Record (ENR). ENR is considered the most credible ranking organisation globally for the consulting engineering industry. The ENR listing is based on fee value, which is the value or revenue generated by the company itself. “The fact that we are a private, management-owned company with African owners makes our commitment real – we have a vested interest in our clients’ success,” adds CFO Joe Ndala.

Zutari is part of The Impact Catalyst initiative founded by Anglo American, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Exxaro, Office of the Premier (OTP) in Limpopo and World Vision South Africa. When the private and public sectors cross-collaborate, it serves as a catalyst for sustained socio-economic impact.

“It is all about making a difference. This refers to responsible infrastructure projects that generate employment and improve local communities. We work in conjunction with our clients, rather than going away and designing what we think to be the answer and then presenting it as a fait accompli. Here it is important to factor in the social impact of design,” concludes Dr. Rohde. Formerly known as Aurecon Africa, Zutari is uniquely positioned to partner with clients to co-create fit-for-purpose solutions for sustainable development through infrastructure. It decided to demerge from the global business in October 2019.
