Wall-clock DIY project is a timeless feature for your home

27 March 2017: Create a unique piece of art guaranteed to add individuality to your home! We found different silver and brass pieces, polished them up, and created a wall clock. Here Dremel provides an easy step-by-step guide for this simple DIY project, using its powerful and versatile hand tools.

Here Dremel provides an easy step-by-step guide for this simple DIY project, using its powerful and versatile tools, Dremel Junior Brand Manger Vision Ndlovu comments. The focus here are Dremel’s cleaning and polishing accessories, which are ideal for cleaning, deburring and surface-finishing items on flat surfaces and in hard-to-reach places, such as slots.

This simple DIY project also utilises the Dremel 8200 cordless rotary multi-tool. This tool is best suited for detailed carving, engraving, routing, cutting, sanding, grinding, sharpening, polishing, and cleaning. The integrated wrench in the EZ Twist nose cap saves time in switching interchangeable accessories during production.

In addition, the tool charges in under an hour for fast and easy project completion. The multi-tool is available in a handy kit that includes a Detailer’s Grip attachment for optimal tool control, and 35 original Dremel accessories, including EZ SpeedClic.

The Dremel glue gun helps to take the effort out of this exciting project. Its innovative design and numerous features render it user-friendly and easy-to-use, with a particular focus on facilitating the task of gluing itself. The Dremel glue gun is the ideal tool for a range of projects, from model building to woodworking, scrapbooking, or case modification (casemodding).

Step 1

Once you have selected the pieces you would like to use to create your clock, brighten them up by polishing them with your Dremel 8200 cordless rotary multi-tool. If you are cleaning brass pieces, as we are here, we recommend using brass brushes. These brushes are non-sparking and softer than steel, which means they will not scratch. However, use brass brushes if you are cleaning soft metals like gold, copper, or brass.

An important tip to remember is that when using any polishing brushes, always run your tool no higher than 15 000 rpm. Slowly make light passes across your workpiece. Began by cleaning larger areas with the 536 brush, and access tighter spaces with the 537 brush.

If you are cleaning silver pieces, remember to rather use bristle brushes. These are perfect for light deburring, cleaning, or polishing of silverware, jewellery, and other precious metals. For an extra shine, use bristle brushes with a polishing compound.

Step 2

Mount your polished pieces to the wall using the glue gun. Add a finishing touch to your clock by embellishing the clock movement (this refers to the centre of the clock, containing the hour and minute hands).

Note that if you are going to be adding polished pieces to the movement itself, a battery-powered movement may not be able to sustain the weight. We found that a corded movement worked best in holding up heavier pieces of silver. Here we took the centre of an old corded movement, and hot-glued the handle of an old spoon and a knife to the hands of the clock. We hid the cord by running it through the wall.
