Part of the Goscor Group, Goscor Access Rental hopes to replicate its recent successful entry into the Secunda market in other key growth areas such as Saldanha Bay, where it expects to have a presence by year end, followed by Richards Bay and East London. “We already have machines active in the Richards Bay area, and are therefore contemplating the viability of a satellite branch there,” Managing Director Andrew Kendrick explains.

The major growth of automotive manufacturers in the Eastern Cape has resulted in East London being considered as a prime location for a new regional branch, while Nelspruit is being considered as an entry point into the north of the country, a market with significant potential, Goscor Access Rental General Manager Nici Verster highlights.

Celebrating its sixth anniversary in September, Goscor Access Rental was established in 2011 to focus mainly on scissor lifts and a few diesel boom-lift products for the construction and events sectors in particular. Since then the company has expanded significantly from servicing the warehousing and small plant markets to a focus on major construction equipment, such as its recent launch of the largest scissor lift in Africa, which caters for the trend of warehouses becoming ever higher.

“We saw a gap in the compact crawler (spider lift) market, where we have been growing our fleet quite significantly. We have introduced some highly competitive brands into that market, predicated on machines that are bigger and easier to use. That has been a major advantage that has allowed us to stay ahead,” Kendrick comments.

Verster adds that Goscor Access Rental has focused on ‘professionalising’ its team over the last 18 months. “We come from a family-orientated business where everybody was highly supportive of each other, but we have now moved onto a much bigger playing field. We have also streamlined the business in terms of getting all of our players onboard. This has all been done in the best interests of our clients, and we think we have made significant inroads in this regard,” Verster elaborates.

Kendrick points out that the three factors giving Goscor Access Rental its leading edge in a highly competitive market are building longstanding relationships with customers, based on top-notch machines; an unparalleled focus on safety, which is a paramount consideration; and a total solutions approach, which uses the best technology to solve customers’ specific problems.

Another key focus is a multi-disciplinary approach to business, which sees all personnel tackle multiple roles, from sales to technical back-up and even breakdown support. “Again this is a key element in driving our repeat business, which involves us keeping our heads down and concentrating on what we do best, in order to ensure our continued growth.”

Looking at the larger business environment, Kendrick says that all companies are challenged to maintain investor confidence in the country. “Our biggest challenge remains to get investors to overcome the downgrade hurdles and larger geopolitical issues. Maybe this requires thinking ‘outside of the box’, such as starting to look at the maintenance side of existing buildings, rather than opting automatically for the big construction projects.” In terms of ongoing opportunities, the major focus at present is greater Africa. “We are looking into those opportunities, and expanding our reach cross-border,” Kendrick concludes.
