PRESS RELEASE
Specialist TAL products used to spruce up Vaal Mall in Vanderbijlpark
30 January 2017: The refurbishment of the Vaal Mall in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng has used specialist products from TAL for the walkways, public toilets and external wall and floor tiling, a total of 16 000 m2.
This was a prestigious project for the tile and construction adhesive specialist, as Vaal Mall is the largest shopping mall in the region. TAL Registered Tiler HL Pardal was the appointed tiling contractor, who not only prefers to use TAL quality products and services, but is a trusted partner on-site.
“The scope of this project was twofold, namely a revamp of the existing tiled mall walkways and ablutions, as well as tiling to new wall and floor surfaces in the extension to the mall,” TAL Technical Consultant Schalk Pelzer explains. The project commenced in April 2015, and took a year to complete. He attributes the success of the project to “a winning combination of excellent workmanship and quality products.”
An array of specialist TAL products were used on this project:
TAL SEALMASTER CORD and TAL GOLDSTAR SEALMASTER 1000 polyurethane joint sealant were used in the tile panel movement joints and perimeter joints, creating ‘separate’ tile panels that are able to move independently from one another, thereby reducing the risk of tile installation failure.
The mall remained fully operational during the refurbishment, which posed a particular challenge in that the project had to be carried out seamlessly without any disruption to the mall’s tenants and patrons.
“Tiling to the existing mall areas was carried out mostly at night in order to adhere to the tight programme,” Pelzer explains. This included uplifting the existing tiles and adhesives and preparing the substrate, including remedial work to the substrate where required, before the new tiles could be installed.
Tiling to the extension (new mall areas) could only commence once the wall and floor substrates had been allowed the stipulated curing/drying times to ensure that the tile installation is not compromised by drying shrinkage or settlement movement in the substrate.
