The event was hosted in Avilés in northwest Spain in June. Upon news of his qualification, SMEC South Africa took the decision to sponsor Lamley’s entire trip to compete in this prestigious event.

“Competing in the World Championships was a lifelong dream for Lamley. SMEC South Africa, in keeping with the company’s values, and its commitment to support its employees and the country, did not hesitate to help Lamley realise his ambitions,” Kostas Rontiris, CEO of SMEC South Africa, commented.

Lamley departed for Spain on 1 June.  He participated with his fellow countrymen in a welcoming ceremony two days later, at which all 30 competing countries were introduced. Lamley’s race took place on 5 June, combining running and cycling over a 55 km route. He completed the event in a time of 2 hours and 32 minutes.

Lamley described the event as an once-in-a-lifetime experience. He subsequently stated that he is looking forward to applying all the lessons he learnt in Spain in both his professional and sporting life.

“I am grateful for SMEC South Africa’s support and sponsorship. Without it, it would not have been possible for me to have proudly flown the South African flag in this international competition,” Lamley concluded.
