The 140-m-long Senqu River Bridge and associated approach roads create a vital link to business and trading opportunities for the residents of Phamong in Southern Lesotho. The professional team for the R150 million project included SMEC South Africa, Elite Consulting, and Stefanutti Stocks Lesotho.

In contrast, the 65-m-long, continuous four-span, self-anchored, arch-supported, stress-ribbon Pacaltsdorp footbridge in George in the Western Cape allows pedestrians from the Pacaltsdorp township to access work opportunities in the town and its surrounds. Both of these community-infrastructure projects are expected to have a major impact on the local economies in the respective areas.

A significant challenge faced by SMEC South Africa at Pacaltsdorp was to create a design that attracted pedestrians away from the highway and towards the bridge, Chris Viljoen, General Manager for Major Projects, comments.

SMEC has extensive experience in the investigation, concept planning, design, documentation, verification and proof engineering of all types of steel, composite, reinforced and prestressed concrete, and cable-stayed bridges, as well as all retaining walls and associated structures.

The consulting engineering company was acknowledged for its involvement with these two major bridge projects at the SAICE-SAFCEC Awards gala event for the Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievements for 2015-16.

SMEC South Africa was declared Structural Engineering winner in the SAICE Division Awards for the Pacaltsdorp Pedestrian Bridge, an award sponsored by Vital Engineering. In International Projects of Excellence, sponsored by PPS, it received a commendation for the Senqu River Bridge.

According to SMEC South Africa CEO Kostas Rontiris, the consulting engineering company’s success with these two major bridge projects “not only reflects the depth of our expertise and experience, but also our capability to tackle important community-infrastructure projects.”
