Single-source supply aids SPM for its total motion-control requirements

1 November 2016
Internationally-recognised pulp fibre moulding machinery design and production specialist Southern Pulp Machinery (SPM) of Cape Town has increased both the number and scope of applications of SEW products significantly over the past 24 months. This has been driven by good export orders for existing and new models of the OEM’s pulp moulding machines and accompanying plants.

Utilising a dedicated supplier like SEW-EURODRIVE for all drive components on its machines allows for easy integration of new technologies, SPM plant engineer, Manfred Habeck comments.

“Being able to select all of the components for our motion control requirements from one supplier with a large offering has numerous benefits, from being able to optimise each application for performance and cost, to the end-user requiring a one-stop shop for field service anywhere in the world,” Habeck explains.

A good example in this regard are the SEW electric cylinders, chosen by SPM due to their simplicity and direct application for use in a new line of pulp moulders. “The existing control philosophy and architecture still applied, while the easy mechanical interfacing allowed for the implementation of elegant motion solutions in a very short time,” Habeck adds.

SPM was able to simplify its technology even further with the introduction of integrated SEW fan encoders for geared AC motors. “This allows for undemanding positioning capability in harsh environments, where either the fast response of servo-systems is not required, or the cost-benefits do not add up,” Habeck points out.

Cape Town-based SPM boasts an installation footprint that spans across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East. It has specialised in the design and manufacture of conventional moulders, special moulders, thermo-forming moulders and end-of-line equipment for over 26 years.

Throughout this period, the company has relied on SEW-EURODRIVE’s synchronous servo motors as well as standard AC geared motors fitted with external encoders to drive its machines. Additional products used include Movitrac drives and Movidrives for the speed control and MoviPLCs for motion control. All programmed via the SEW Motion Studio software. Habeck adds that SEW-EURODRIVE’s unrivalled product quality is supported by world-class aftersales and technical support.

“We are dependent on timeous delivery and overall performance. SEW-EURODRIVE representatives are quick to respond during breakdowns or modifications, and always display commitment to resolving any issues speedily, anywhere in the world. Additional value-added services include assistance with component selection and accurate on-line 3D CAD models of geared motors,” he concludes.
