SEW Eurodrive remains firmly committed to the KZN industry

Having moved its KwaZulu-Natal premises in April 2013 to increase capacity and keep up with demand, specialist drive engineering company SEW Eurodrive has displayed further commitment to the local industry by announcing that it will be displaying its product range at this year's KZN Industrial Technology Exhibition - being hosted at the Durban Exhibition Centre from July 23 to July 26, 2013.

SEW Eurodrive branch manager for the region, Cas de Jager notes that the strong industrial sector in KZN plays a pivotal role in the continued success of the company. "It is for this reason that the company continues to make a more concerted effort in moving closer to its customers, not only by interactively exhibiting at the event, but also through our purpose built factory, which has improved service and parts availability, allowing for flexibility in design and shorter lead times."

De Jager indicates that the new 4 000 m2 fully roofed SEW Eurodrive facility in Isipingo has been designed to offer customers dedicated service capabilities, including; the assembly and servicing of small to large geared motors, the assembly and field servicing of industrial gears and on site lathe and milling machine capabilities for modifications to shafts and couplings.

"One half of the facility boasts a crane capacity of 14 tons, and the other half a total crane capacity of 18 tons. What's more, thefactory in KZN to  has exclusively been installed with energy saving LED lighting throughout and environmental factors were considered on all aspects of the building, thereby underpinning SEW Eurodrive’s commitment to energy saving through modernisation and investments in energy saving concepts,"  he continues.

In order to further highlight these impressive capabilities, De Jager notes that SEW Eurodrive will be displaying at the 2013 KZN Industrial Technology Exhibition, as he believes that it serves as an ideal platform for industry decision makers to keep abreast of the latest technology, industry trends and innovations, while comparing and evaluating competitor products - all in one central location.

He says: "Among the SEW Eurodrive products on display is the environmentally friendly and maintenance free MOVITRANS contactless energy transfer system, which transfers electrical energy without contact from a fixed conductor to numerous mobile consumers. The electromagnetic connection is made via an air gap and is not subject to wear, and is therefore maintenance free. This makes MOVITRANS the perfect supply system for all mobile applications, where equipment has to cover long distances at high speeds, and  where a maintenance free operation is required."

."Another environmental advantage of this type of power supply is that it is emission free and resistant to contamination from external sources. The MOVITRANS system also provides for greater safety too, due to the fact that workers can actually walk over the cables and touch them with their hands, without worrying about electrocution."

With MOVITRANS , the cable is either laid out on the floor or via an overhead trolley system, which also comes with a floor conveying option, making it a cost effective replacement for forklifts in warehousing applications. De Jager states: "The cable would be laid at the required distance that needs to be covered. SEW Eurodrive would then calculate the  MOVITRANS system required through project planning and assist the customer with the planning phase before the mobile units are manufacturered.“

De Jager continues by explaining that a pickup unit on the mobile unit traps the energy transferred from the cable and converts it to usable energy, which can be used to drive the wheels of the mobile unit that is transporting the material from one point to another. "Although the MOVITRANS contactless transfer system has been available in the European market for a number of years, it is still a relatively new concept in Africa. SEW Eurodrive has, however, received numerous enquiries from local industries that range from automotive and logistics, to storage and materials handling. A large order was recently secured from a local petrochemical company."

In addition to the MOVITRANS, De Jager indicates that SEW Eurodrive will also be displaying its MOVIGEAR mechatronic drive system at the 2013 KZN Industrial Technology Exhibition. "MOVIGEAR is an intelligent device which incorporates a gearbox, servo motor and inverter in one compact design. It  is fairly simple to install and requires little maintenance.  The largest selling point of this unit is the energy efficiency it can offer a customer. Studies have proven that a holistic approach to energy efficiency using these units can constitute a saving of up to 50% in energy costs.

As the demands on materials handling systems become more complex and specific with less available space, De Jager points out that MOVIGEAR boasts a favourable, compact design that is ideal for planning more efficient materials handling systems. "The housing has been optimised specifically for these types of applications and can be easily integrated in today’s conveyor systems. The hygenic design makes it ideal for the food and beverage industry."

The final product line being displayed by SEW Eurodrive at the event is a planetary industrial geared motor. The P Series (planetary range) comes in 11 sizes and offers high transmittable torque in a compact design. The short compact design means there is no need for couplings or adapter flanges. The planetary unit is often found in the cement, sugar , timber and port industries. It is typically used for for slow moving high torque applications. It offers torque of up to 500kNm.“

He points out that the  P Series industrial gear units are ideally suited to  ball mills in a wide variety of industries. "

SEW Eurodrive will be exhibiting at Stand F 23 throughout the entire duration of the 2013 KZN Industrial Technology Exhibition. To find out more visit www.sew.co.za
