PRESS RELEASE

New rope lubricator ensures substantial capital and time savings

1 July, 2014: A quick and effective solution for the lubrication of wire ropes in industrial applications is available in the local market through Filter Focus - a leading wear control expert specialising in the development, design and manufacture of offline filtration systems.

The Viper Wire Rope Lubricator MKII is suitable for use on wire rope with diameters ranging from 8 mm to 67 mm, and can operate at speeds of up to 2 000 m per hour. Filter Focus COO Craig FitzGerald observes that the Viper Lubricator eliminates the need for companies to carry out manual lubrication applications, which can be time-consuming and labour-intensive.

“The Viper Wire rope lubricator achieves more thorough lubrication of the wire rope as the pressure forces lubricant through the core of the rope. It offers the user high-pressure, one-pass lubrication of the wire rope and reduces lubrication consumption by up to 90 percent. As the lubricant is forced into the centre of the rope under pressure, each individual strand is lubricated thereby eliminating fretting corrosion” he explains.

The Viper Wire prevents corrosion of the wire rope, and displaces moisture from the core of the rope, which increases operational lifespan. It also provides time and cost savings, as it only requires lubrication every seven months as opposed to every two months with manual lubrication.

As a result, FitzGerald indicates that lubrication time dramatically decreases, which reduces the downtime of the facility. "What's more, this automated process offers the added benefit of improved worker safety during the lubrication process, as workers are not exposed to the ropes."

According to FitzGerald, the Viper Wire rope lubricator is comprised of numerous parts that work together in order to get the wire rope to its optimum performance level. “The Viper Wire rope cleaner (VRC) is mounted onto the rope first, and is responsible for removing contaminants on the rope, such as old lubricant and dirt contamination. Once the VRC is connected, the Viper Collar is connected."

The Viper Collar clamps easily around the rope, thanks to the cast handles and simple design. Once it is in place, FitzGerald indicates that the toggles must be tightened firmly by hand. "The pump and airline are then connected, and one end of the lubricant hose is connected to the grease pump, with the other connected to the Viper Collar. There is also a lubricant discharge hose which is responsible for removing any excess lubricant.”

Another essential component is the Viper pump, which is capable of pumping in excess of 4 kg of lubricant onto the wire rope per hour. FitzGerald reveals that this form of wire rope lubrication results in significantly less wastage of the lubricant. "The Viper Wire rope lubricator can therefore be used for a variety of industrial applications. These include the lubrication of wire rope for; ship loaders, wharf cranes, specialised lifting cranes, mobile cranes, shaft winders and spool drums."

In order to get the most out of the Viper Wire rope lubricator, it is recommended to use LE452 or LE453 Almasol coating wire rope lubricant. This lubricant does not drip or wash off of the wire rope, even in underwater applications. "By using this lubrication, the warranty of the Viper Wire is also increased to two years. The savings and advantages offered by the Viper Wire rope lubricator make it the ideal lubrication applicator for any industrial lubrication task,” FitzGerald concludes.
