“Historically, we have been heavily weighted towards the coal and power industry. However, diversification is important and has been a major focus of Voith for some time now,” Grant Robinson, Vice President, Mining & Metals Division: EMEA, comments.

In terms of mining, Voith’s major focus is on materials handling. However, its main products can be used in many different applications. Voith is well-known for its hydrodynamic couplings, offering a complete range of solutions, from constant fill to fill control couplings.

It also offers shaft-to-shaft couplings, holdbacks, braking systems, speed switches, pulleys, universal joint shafts, torque limiting and highly flexible couplings, belt-on-belt drive systems, belt take-up stations and belt cleaning, all supported fully by an aftermarket service team.

The application engineering team can design drive solutions across various applications, such as fans, mills, crushers, conveyors, steel mills and more. Voith’s competitive edge in terms of its design capability includes full simulation of its hydrodynamic couplings with its proprietary TurboSim® software in order to give its customers guaranteed peace of mind before committing to a purchase decision.

“Generally speaking, the fluid coupling in the driveline is not given the position of importance it deserves, particularly in materials handling. It is the coupling that, in actual fact, controls the peak torque throughput, thereby protecting the belt and starting up the equipment. The fluid coupling can be considered as a mechanically engineered automatic start-up of a piece of equipment. This is where our expertise lies and where Voith excels,” Robinson explains.

“Our service team is multi-skilled and can carry out on-site fault finding, installation and commissioning, vibration monitoring, thermal imaging of equipment and both static and dynamic laser alignments,” he elaborates.

The opportunity for Voith going forward is moving from being a component supplier to being a solutions provider. For example, the recent acquisition of the German company HESE means additional materials handling solutions for customers.

“We can now offer chutes, pulleys and drive solutions such as the TT drive (a belt-on-belt drive) and drive packs. In specific applications such as very long overland belts or long inclined belts, the TT drive reduces capital investment significantly. Voith remains consistently focused on customer needs, which includes the need for reliable engineering, availability and reduced cost of ownership,” Robinson concludes.
