Long-term focus on project management is key to Hatch Goba's success
26 November, 2013:Consulting engineering and project implementation firm Hatch Goba is committed to taking full responsibility for its clients’ projects from inception to completion, by offering dedicated support throughout the entire lifecycle of the project.
Hatch Goba is an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) company that boasts in-depth experience and expertise in a broad spectrum of engineering projects. Hatch Goba project manager Johan Breytenbach points out that the 'Project Lifecycle Process' (PLP) is the company's unique project delivery methodology used on both large and small scale projects.
“The main benefit of the PLP process is that it has a consistent project delivery approach, as each project is managed according to this process. This results in a constant focus on client value, quality of work, sustainability, solutions and workplace safety by ensuring that engineering, procurement, safety and industrial relations are developed from day one,” he explains.
The Hatch Goba PLP methodology is based on a phased approach to project delivery called 'Front End Loading' (FEL) which affords better opportunity in the earlier phases of a project to influence the successful outcome of the project . Each phase successfully passed becomes the building block to the next. Breytenbach states that all projects start with a business plan before undergoing four phases, the first of which being the conceptual phase.
“We assist the client in identifying various concepts which could feasibly meet the project imperative so that these may be taken forward to the next phase for further development and elimination. The next phase is the prefeasibility phase during which the identified concepts are further developed into a finally-selected preferred option that the client would take forward into execution. These initial phases are vital to ensure that no possible solution is overlooked and only that concept that best satisfies the project objectives is taken forward for implementation,” he adds.
According to Breytenbach, this is followed by the feasibility phase, where basic engineering begins and the project is fully defined in all its detail. “In the FEL 3 phase, the project execution plan, clearly specifying all construction management details is developed, cost estimates are refined and the execution schedules are developed.”
The final phase of the process is FEL 4, the execution phase where the project is physically implemented strictly according to the engineering details and project execution plan developed in the previous phase. This phase takes the project all the way from detailed engineering and contract procurement, to the final construction of facilities, commissioning, hand over and operational support.
Breytenbach indicates that through each of the project’s phases, the transition is clearly defined and strictly monitored by Hatch Goba. “To ensure that the highest standards of quality are maintained on a consistent basis throughout the project, we undergo stringent gate reviews between each phase to comprehensively review the processes and work carried out in the previous phase, in order to ensure that all the objectives have been fully met and the correct outcomes are achieved,” he says.
Breytenbach highlights the fact that operational support is an important and unique feature offered by Hatch Goba. "We do not simply construct a facility for the client to take over. We assist the client with operational readiness, and are also closely involved with the first stages of operating the facility once built. Thereafter Hatch Goba provides operational support throughout the lifetime of the project.”

Breytenbach comments: “We follow four main principles, the first of which is safety and employer wellbeing - the cornerstone of everything that we do. Quality-of-work, together with sustainability are also fundamental principles. Breytenbach points out that Hatch Goba also has several ongoing training initiatives in place within the company to assist its employees in developing their personal skills and expertise. "When a project is being established, a parallel training programme framework is set up for the benefit of all employees that are involved."
