LiFePO4 battery packs ideal for forklifts to golf carts and back-up power

24 June 2020
In addition to supplying lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery packs for forklifts in materials-handling applications, CHASE Technologies is also ramping up supply to ancillary markets such as golf carts, cleaning equipment and access platforms, and even back-up power solutions to assist with load shedding, General Manager Brent Frazer comments.

For golf carts, the main advantage of LiFePO4 battery packs is their longevity. With a five-year guarantee and a life expectancy almost double that, it proves much more convenient and cost-effective than replacing deep-cycle lead acid batteries every two or three years. Furthermore, opportunity charging means that the battery can be quickly topped up at the halfway house or nineteenth hole.

In terms of cleaning equipment, LiFePO4 battery packs can allow companies to spend more time cleaning and less time on charging and maintenance, as equipment is up-and-running at all times. “This is the perfect zero maintenance power source requiring no battery watering, fuel-tank replacement or storage,” Frazer stresses.

The application of LiFePO4 technology in forklifts represents the latest advance in motive power in this sector. Not only are LiFePO4 battery packs more cost-effective and maintenance-free, they are environmentally-friendly as well. Due to their long lifespan, these batteries do not have to be recycled as often either. They can be opportunity charged, meaning more uptime when needed.

LiFePO4 battery packs are revolutionising the market for electric industrial equipment such as reach trucks. These high-power energy cells offer a major total cost of ownership advantage over traditional lead-acid batteries. The increased capacity translates into improved warehouse efficiency and handling capacity. Rapid charging and zero maintenance guarantee continuous operation.

LiFePO4 battery packs can improve the flexibility and throughput of any warehouse operation, ensuring high availability of critical equipment such as pallet jacks. While lead-acid batteries are the traditional standard for materials-handling equipment like forklifts and pallet jacks, advances in lithium ion technology have revolutionised the sector. “Supply-chain management has never been more efficient and productive thanks to these developments,” Frazer points out.

CHASE Technologies has the capability to supply all Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), as it is able to rejig its battery packs to fit any brand of forklift. The company has an exclusive distribution agreement with the highest-volume producer of heavy-duty LiFePO4 batteries globally. These range from small 25.6V 135Ah units, right up to larger 80V 700Ah units.

This wide range means that CHASE Technologies can cater for most customer requirements in the forklift segment. Its all-aluminium casings, inserted in heavy-duty mild steel tanks, are manufactured especially at its Alrode South facility for extra durability and robustness. These can also be customised for specific customer requirements.

Not only is LiFePO4 the most stable lithium ion battery technology available, it is also less energy-dense when compared to the most common lithium ion chemistries currently on the market. The added volume and weight per KW of energy is no disadvantage in forklift applications, since the battery forms part of the counterweight of the forklift.

As such, anything more compact or lighter would require additional ballast weight – which would add to the cost. “This is why LiFePO4 is the most suitable chemical configuration and physical structure for the industrial equipment market,” Frazer concludes.
