KBC Health & Safety increases its online learning product offering

9 December 2020
A leading provider of Onboarding, training and contractor management solutions throughout Southern Africa, KBC Health & Safety has increased its portfolio of online learning products so that learners can complete their courses anywhere and at any time. Site Induction courses require that, on completion of the online programme, learners complete an assessment at one of KBC’s branches under a controlled environment that adheres to all Covid-19 regulations. Digital platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Webinars are also used to carry out training remotely.

“Our support team is available during business hours via the KBC Helpline to assist learners,” explains KBC Innovation Manager Natalie Pitout. KBC offers the following courses online: BST L1 and L2, HIRA, Office Safety, Construction Regulations and Legal Liability. It has also customised online learning for some of its corporate clients and trained and redeployed existing staff on this updated offering.

“The benefit of online learning to clients during Covid-19 is that fewer people are exposed to the risk of infection, a risk which is heightened when there are large groups of people gathered together. Levels of computer literacy and a good command of the English language of learners must be considered to ensure effective completion of the programme and for knowledge retention. Clients would need to provide data for learners to access the internet where necessary,” highlights Pitout.

While KBC has seen an increased demand for its digital solutions, there is still a need for instructor-led training for Level 1 learners. It uses a blended approach for its training programmes that integrates Virtual Reality, a simulated experience similar to the real world such as working at heights, and 360° virtual tours, a simulation of a work area where learners are required to identify hazards.

A blended approach enhances the overall learning experience and increases learning retention. KBC also offers micro-learning, which is bite-size modules that can be accessed by scanning a QR code displayed in any work area at the commencement of a high-risk task.

“Technology has taken root in our day-to-day lives and learning is rapidly changing as a result. With information at our fingertips, learning is now boundless. Technology can be used to improve learning experiences and learner knowledge retention. We have seen with Covid-19 that the use of technology has largely increased, and I am sure it will continue to do so well beyond the end of the pandemic,” concludes Pitout.
