John T. Ryan Trophy winners unveiled at MineSAFE 2017

11 September 2017: Safety achievements in the mining industry were celebrated at the MineSAFE 2017 Industry Day on Friday 1 September 2017 at Emperors Palace in Gauteng. MSA Africa Sales Manager Christiaan Hugo presented the John T. Ryan Trophy for the best surface and underground operation respectively.

MineSAFE aims to advance the achievement of zero harm in the South African mining industry by bringing together management, the Department of Mineral Resources, the Chamber of Mines, trade unions, and health and safety practitioners at all levels of the industry to share best practice and strategies in this regard.

MSA Africa in particular has been involved with MineSAFE since 2011. “This is testament to our ongoing commitment to improve safety records in all sectors of the South African mining industry continually,” Hugo stresses.

The winners are determined by an impartial panel of judges representing the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the Association of Mine Managers of South Africa (AMMSA), the South African Colliery Managers Association (SACMA) and the Metallurgical Mine Managers’ Association (MMMA).

The award is named after the original founder of MSA, and introduced to the Canadian mining industry in 1941, before expanding globally. It is sculpted to represent a father safely home from work, with his arms around the shoulders of his son and daughter. This symbolises that the mineworker is the most important commodity, together with the embodiment of safety best practice in the mining industry.

The 2017 John T. Ryan Trophy winners are:

  • Surface Operations: Exxaro NBC Coal, Lazarus Ramashilabele (Mine Manager), no fatalities since 1925 when operations commenced.
  • Underground Operations: Assmang, Black Rock Mine, Pierre Becker (Mine Manager), 5.59 million fatality-free shifts as at 30 June 2015
