I-CAT’s integrated waste management services focus on Waste Management Licence (WML) applications, classification, assessment of waste-to-landfill, and integrated waste-management planning in line with current waste-management legislation, I-CAT Business Development and Marketing Director Lourens Jansen van Rensburg explains.

Compliance issues with current waste legislation and regulations can be contributed to a variety of factors, including a lack of understanding of waste legislation and associated regulations, and incorrect interpretation of roles, responsibilities and compliance timeframes associated with regulations.

“This is compounded further by financial costs associated with new waste-management infrastructure, record keeping, and SANS 10234 classification, together with limited compliance enforcement capability from the regulating authorities,” Jansen van Rensburg highlights.

SANS 10234 establishes criteria for the classification and labelling of hazardous substances and mixtures, including waste, to ensure safe transport and disposal. Under SANS 10234, it must be established whether the waste is hazardous based on physical, health, and environmental hazardous properties (hazard classes), and the degree or severity of the hazard posed (hazard categories).

Furthermore, I-CAT has the necessary skills and experience to conduct waste-compliance auditing and reporting for clients. These audits relate to WMLs, facilities (disposal, storage, and treatment), and waste-management systems. Another benefit of I-CAT Environmental Services for customers is that it can assist clients in complying with the South African Waste Information Systems (SAWIS) regulations to ensure that waste information is captured and submitted correctly.

In order to comply with Sections 11 and 28 of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEM:WA), I-CAT also assists municipalities, industries, and companies with the preparation of  Integrated Waste Management Plans. “We can provide cost-effective, technically- and environmentally-acceptable solutions in terms of integrated waste-management strategies,” Jansen van Rensburg highlights.

“I-CAT Environmental Solutions adds measurable value in assisting various operations in the industrial and mining sectors by offering specialist services in waste classification and management, environmental compliance monitoring (water, dust, noise), environmental authorisation processes, and comprehensive annual audits and reviews,” Jansen van Rensburg concludes.
