Located at the entrance to Company Gardens near the Parliament Building in Cape Town, South Africa, the Arch – a symbol of Tutu’s contribution to freedom – celebrates peace and empathy.

Kevin Odenthal, Hatch Project Manager, explains: “This was a great opportunity for Hatch to contribute to this community, doing our part in creating a lasting legacy. The structure is a fitting tribute for a man who has committed his life to speaking out against injustice here and abroad.”

Working with Local Studio Architects, Hatch’s services were provided on a pro bono basis, and included obtaining all necessary approvals from the City of Cape Town, providing civil and structural foundation design for the Arch, liaising with the impacted utilities, monitoring the construction process, and supplying quality control.

Pieter de Kock, Practice Lead for Water & Natural Environment Business Unit, Western Cape, at Hatch, adds: “Our expertise and track record of experience in working with local authorities in complex urban environments allows us to complete projects like this one, successfully and under very tight timelines.”

Close collaboration with the City of Cape Town, and attention to the architect’s specific requirements, were particularly essential in this instance, as the Desmond Tutu Memorial Arch stands to become a prominent cultural landmark in Cape Town, like the great man himself.

‘Arch for Arch’ originated from a winning submission at Cape Town’s Design Indaba 2017. The structure is made up of 14 intertwined strands of bent wood, each representing the 14 chapters of the South African constitution. The structural properties of an arch therefore emerged as the core concept of the design.

The project was funded by Liberty Holdings, and designed by Norwegian architect Snøhetta and Local Studio Architects of South Africa. Smart Civils constructed the foundation, while the timber arches were constructed by Swissline Design.

The civil and structural design team for this project was led by de Kock, with Dawie Malan, Senior Structural Engineer at Hatch, providing the reinforced concrete design. Hannes Mostert, Resident Engineer at Hatch, oversaw the construction monitoring, while Alroy Hoffmeester, Civil Technologist at Hatch, assisted with the civil works design, and the liaison with the affected fibre-optic utilities.
