The relocation project, spearheaded by Cummins Africa Middle East and Cummins Central Supply Chain Operations (CSCO) leadership, was aimed at achieving various important strategic goals, according to Cummins Ghana Operations Manager Felix Bani.

These focused on enhanced safety and working conditions, brand awareness, and increased regional sales opportunities. This is aligned with the broader vision of setting up the Ghana RDC to support the ABO in providing a platform for sustained growth in the region.

Cummins Africa Central Supply Chain Operations Leader Peter Stephanis elaborates that the new location was selected carefully. It is the first world-class logistics park in Ghana, 8 km from the main sea port. It is also adjacent to the Aflao highway, which connects many countries in West Africa, most notably Côte d'Ivoire, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria. This ensures that product distribution can be fast-tracked, either by road, sea or air.

The relocation encompassed a redesign of the warehouse layout, and adding racking backstops and drip trays, additional shelving, and enhancing the inbound and outbound work areas. From a logistics point of view, the relocation involved loading parts from racks into carts, dismantling the racking, transporting it to the new facility, and then reassembling it again. This was all achieved with minimal disruption to outbound shipments to Cummins customers.

Over 100 000 pieces across 10 400 locations were moved from the old facility to the ADP, a major undertaking that required extensive cooperation between the Ghana RDC team. Now that the relocation has been completed, the strategic focus will shift to partnering with the Distribution business to fast-track a bond solution for whole goods, and also improve service delivery to all customers in West Africa.

“We are confident that our West Africa clients will soon see the benefits of the move. In addition to improving our customer service, it will aid us in increasing our market share in the region,” Bani concludes.
