Exciting mineral enhances the soil on golf courses and gardens

11 May 2020

“The main benefit of Pratley Vulture Creek Clino is that it keeps golf-course grass greener for longer, and reduces the frequency of applying fertiliser, thus saving money in the long run,” Pratley Marketing Director Eldon Kruger explains. It is ideal for golf-course maintenance, new golf courses, or any garden where the soil needs to be enhanced for lawns or flowerbeds.

Clinoptilolite, a type of Zeolite, enhances the soil quality of gardens and golf courses in particular. It is being increasingly used by landscape architects, greenskeepers and developers. Recent successes include Ferndale and Northriding in Johannesburg.

Pratley Vulture Creek Clino acts as a soil conditioner that boosts the fertility of the soil, in turn improving its ability to provide nutrition to the grass. It has a strong internal negative charge and absorbs positively-charged cations such as potassium and ammonium, common in fertilisers. It releases these cations slowly over a longer period, extending the efficacy of the fertiliser.

It is also often used on coastal golf courses where the soil is normally very sandy, meaning that the fertiliser quickly leaches out of the soil when it rains. However, Pratley Vulture Creek Clino retains nutrients and moisture in the root zone of the grass.

Unlike potentially harmful chemical fertilisers that can end up in rivers and dams, the product is a completely natural and environment-friendly mineral. It also stays in the soil for many years and is totally harmless. The same mineral is fed to farm animals as a stock remedy. “As concern for our environment continually increases, there is a growing need for completely ‘green’ solutions,” Kruger adds.

Pratley Vulture Creek Clino is normally sold in 50 kg bags. However, for large projects it can also be supplied in one cubic metre bulk bags. It is available from Pratley’s head office in Johannesburg or depots in Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.
