DCD raising funds to fight cancer by ‘walking the talk’
16 February, 2015: Compassionate DCD employees are seeking to raise funds to donate to the fight against cancer, by participating in the 2015 Relay for Life event, hosted by the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).
Relay for Life is an annual and international event where teams are challenged to keep at least one member walking on a track for a total of 12 hours overnight to raise funds. The 2015 event takes place overnight from 21 to 22 February at participating community centres nationwide. DCD will be taking part in the Vaal Triangle event, hosted at North West University’s Vanderbijlpark campus.
DCD public relations and brand co-ordinator Natacha Templeman notes that this is the fourth year that the company is participating in Relay for Life. “As a large company, DCD has a number of employees who have either survived cancer, or are busy fighting the disease. We hope to make a difference by raising funds for CANSA, which does great work in supporting people affected by the disease. This is our biggest entry, with eight teams and 120 people. We aim to achieve great results.”
About Relay for Life
The first Relay was held in the USA in 1985, when Dr Gordon Klatt walked for 24 hours to raise money for cancer research. That first year it raised the equivalent of R24 000. Since then, Relay for Life events around the world have raised over R1,5-billion to support initiatives to eliminate cancer.
Launched locally in 2005, increasing numbers of people continue to come together to fight cancer – ensuring that Relay for Life is fast becoming CANSA’s flagship project. Each event starts with the Survivors’ and Caregivers’ Lap, a testimony to the fact that so many people today survive cancer.
Cancer survivors from the community walk the first lap around the track to celebrate their victories while everyone else cheers them on. The most inspirational time of Relay for Life is the Luminaria or Candle of Hope Ceremony which takes place after sundown. This is to honour cancer survivors and remember those who have lost their battle with the disease.
Every Relay for Life is a smoke and alcohol free event. This creates the opportunity to ‘walk-the-talk’ and show the community how easy it is to follow a cancer smart lifestyle, reducing the risk of developing the disease through dietary, sun protection and exercise measures.
