Bobcat E55 keeps Trail Boys on their toes in Stellenbosch during lockdown

4 September 2020
When professional downhill mountain bike racer Theo Erlangsen had to return to South Africa unexpectedly from a racing event in Portugal due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he ended up in lockdown on a farm in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape together with Ike Klassen, Justin Novella and Duran van Eeden.

Fortunately for Theo, Justin is a trail builder who has created the infamous Hellsend Dirt Compound for the past three years, while Duran has been riding and building trails for the past 15 years. Both set out to transform the farm into a track experience that Theo declares is like “quarantining in heaven.”

Theo adds that his experience on the farm has been “a close second in terms of a best-case scenario. We are almost too busy doing cool things all of the time. We can dirt jump, ride down-laps, we can pit bike and swim.”

Ike reveals that there has been a good-natured rivalry between Justin and Duran for exclusive access to the Bobcat E55 compact excavator from Bobcat Equipment South Africa. Both are well-versed in operating this flexible and easy-to-use machine.

The compact excavator has been pivotal in creating rough-and-fast downhill trails on the farm to keep the quarantined bikers on their toes. “We wanted something fresh that would keep the guys interested,” explains Duran.

First up was carving out the Corona track, an insane downhill course through the forest from top to bottom. The boys hit the building work hard and then set to work stacking clips and roosting turns. Getting the pit bike track built was a dream come true for Ike, who started his career on bikes with Moto X and was a junior national champion. For some light relief, the boys also jumped into one of the race buggies on the farm and put the pedal to the metal.

The reliability of a compact excavator contributes to its lifelong operating cost. Bobcat uses computer-assisted design techniques, highly durable materials and structures that are endurance-tested under extreme conditions. The E55 also features an improved boom swing control. The boom swing is controlled by a thumb wheel on the left joystick as opposed to the pedal control used on many competitive machines of this size.

This feature offers improved controllability or metering of the boom swing function, while creating more floor space for the operator. In order to save fuel, reduce noise and create a more comfortable environment, the Bobcat E55 features ‘auto-idle’ as a standard feature. Activated at the operator’s discretion, it automatically causes the engine to drop to idle if the excavator functions are not used for a period of four seconds.
