“Construction of the new Learning Commons for the African Leadership Academy was already underway when we were appointed to assist with the interior design of the space.  The project is the refurbishment of a 3 800 sqm existing industrial building, and comprises various learning spaces, including classrooms, reading rooms, a library and a build lab.

The African Leadership Academy is a non-profit organisation based in Honeydew, Johannesburg, and its aspiration is to shape Africa’s future by identifying, developing, and connecting the leaders of tomorrow.
Each year, the Academy brings 260 students between the ages of 16 to 19 from over 40 African countries to its campus for an intensive programme, including leadership training.

A unique school like the African Leadership Academy requires a learning commons unlike any other, and a transformative space for teaching. The interior aims to enhance learning opportunities for students, from interactive classrooms that encourage participation, to quiet spaces where students can break away and focus on their work.”
